Gen Z Drives Box Office Revival as Moviegoing Beats Pre-Pandemic Frequencies
Generation Z is fueling a box office comeback, attending more films per year than some older cohorts and accounting for nearly 40% of all North American movie audiences in 2025, according to new data from Comscore and Fandango. The demographic, aged roughly 14 to 29, saw an average of seven movies in theaters last year, matching millennial viewership and exceeding the roughly six films attended by Generation X and baby boomers.
Demographic Shift Reshapes Theater Industry
"The pandemic sparked fears that Gen Z would abandon cinemas for streaming, but the data shows the opposite," said Jason Dorsey, president and co-founder of The Center for Generational Kinetics and co-author of "Zconomy." "Gen Z absolutely wants to leave their house β probably more than you know." Dorsey noted that the cohort's pandemic-era experience, which he called a "generation-defining experience," has made them "much more fiscally conscious" and "thrifty" than expected, yet they remain willing to spend on theatrical outings.
Carrie Trotter, senior vice president of marketing at AMC Entertainment Holdings, told CNBC: "Not only are we seeing a bigger and bigger percentage of Gen Z make up our overall audience, but their frequency is increasing year over year. So they have become one of the most important audiences for us, and I see that in the future, it may become the absolute most important audience for us."
Cost and Loyalty Drive Frequency
Affordability is a key factor in Gen Z's moviegoing habits. "Ticket pricing has gone up, but when you compare it to the year-over-year inflation rate, it's on par, if not less," said Steve Buck of EntTelligence, a movie data firm. "When you think about Gen Z, they are cost-conscious, but they're opening up their wallet." The generation, which grew up during the Covid-19 pandemic, combines cost-consciousness with a desire for out-of-home experiences, according to Dorsey. "Covid uprooted all of their plans β going to school, going to college β everything got turned upside down and it lasted for a long period of time," he said. "So we see them much more fiscally conscious."
Studio and Theater Response
Studios and theater chains are adjusting strategies as Gen Z becomes the dominant box office demographic. Fandango data shows the cohort now attends more films annually than some older generations, prompting companies like AMC to focus on building loyalty among younger viewers. "Gen Z is driving moviegoer trends today, and I think people are shocked," Dorsey added.
