Mum, 30, Killed as Innocent Bystander Outside Sheffield Bar; Three Arrested on Suspicion of Murder
The family of a 30-year-old woman fatally shot outside a bar in Sheffield city centre while on a night out have described her as "truly one of a kind." South Yorkshire Police identified the victim as Shanice Brookes, who was killed outside One Four One on West Street in the early hours of Monday, calling her an "innocent bystander." Three people have been arrested on suspicion of murder in connection with the incident.
Victim Profile and Family Tribute
Shanice Brookes, a mother of one young son, worked for a charity in Sheffield and was pursuing a university degree. Her family issued a statement saying: "She was truly one of a kind and she will be missed by all who were lucky enough to know and love her." They added that Brookes had the "biggest heart and the kind of energy you could never forget." The tribute continued: "She was a deeply loved daughter, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend and godmother, as well as being an amazing mum to her son, who meant the world to her. To her cousins, she was more like a sister β someone they could always turn to for love, laughter and support."
Arrests and Investigation
South Yorkshire Police had previously described the shooting as "senseless." A 30-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman were arrested near Stockport, Greater Manchester, and remain in custody after officers secured additional time to question them. A 30-year-old man arrested in Sheffield has since been released and is no longer considered a suspect. Police are continuing to appeal for information about a white Audi that was parked at the junction of Eldon Street and West Hill Street.
Family Statement on Her Future
The familyβs tribute noted that Brookes was also due to graduate from university, calling it "a reflection of her determination, ambition and the bright future ahead of her." They added: "She could light up every room she walked in to with her infectious laugh, beautiful soul and magical aura. Shanice made people feel loved, safe and valued simply by being herself."
Police Appeal and Broader Impact
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Knowles stated: "Shanice was a young woman who was in the prime of her life and was simply enjoying a night out in the city centre over the bank holiday weekend. People often say innocent victims were in the wrong place at the wrong time, but Shanice was not in the wrong place at the wrong time β we should all be able to go on nights out and know that we will come home safely." He added: "This incident lays bare the devastation gun crime causes within families and communities and I want to send a clear message to those who witnessed the incident or have information on those involved. If you saw what happened on Monday morning, or have information about who was involved, please do not stay silent." Knowles concluded: "Shanice's family, including her young son, are now facing the heartbreaking reality that they will never see her again. The reckless actions of others have taken her life away from her and the sad reality is that any of us, or our loved ones, could have been the victim of this senseless incident."
Context
The case echoes other fatal shootings outside UK nightlife venues, such as the 2023 killing of 22-year-old Lamorne Williams outside a Birmingham nightclub, and the 2022 death of 28-year-old Tanesha Melbourne in Tottenham, London, who was caught in crossfire while socialising. Both cases involved innocent bystanders and led to murder convictions.
