American Airlines to Equip Over 500 Narrow-Body Jets with SpaceX Starlink Wi-Fi
American Airlines plans to install SpaceX’s Starlink satellite internet on more than 500 of its narrow-body aircraft, marking another win for Elon Musk’s unit as it expands into commercial aviation. The airline announced the decision Tuesday, with installations on Airbus narrow-body models such as the A321neo set to begin in early 2026.
Selection Process and Fleet Details
American Airlines was still weighing Starlink against Amazon’s Project Kuiper, operated by Amazon Leo, as recently as March. The carrier’s spokesman said there are no immediate plans to change providers on its Boeing fleet, which currently uses a mix of Viasat and Panasonic systems. The Starlink installation will cover approximately 500 Airbus narrow-body planes.Industry Shift Toward Free and Faster In-Flight Internet
American Airlines introduced complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi for members of its AAdvantage frequent flyer program in January, following similar moves by United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and other carriers. Delta announced in March that it would deploy Amazon Leo on hundreds of its jets starting in 2028. United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Alaska Airlines—which merged with Hawaiian Airlines in 2024—have already selected Starlink. Carriers are competing for higher-spending passengers by upgrading historically slow, costly, and unreliable in-flight connectivity to faster speeds, while also exploring new revenue streams such as personalized advertising.SpaceX IPO and Starlink Financials
SpaceX is preparing for an initial public offering, expected to set records next month. In a filing earlier this month, SpaceX reported that its connectivity unit—including Starlink—generated revenue of $11.39 billion last year, accounting for 61% of total company sales.Market Context
